How to Apply Rhinestones Professionally

Professional rhinestone application comes down to three things: surface prep, precise placement, and a secure bond. This step-by-step guide covers the complete process, using methods developed by Kellie DeFries over 20+ years of professional rhinestone artistry.

What You Need Before You Start

  • KiraKira glass rhinestones in your chosen size and color

  • Rhinestone tray or flocked pad for sorting stones

  • Clean surface free of dust, oil, and debris
  • Good lighting (side lighting reveals surface texture and stone placement)
  • Design template or transfer (optional but helpful for complex designs)

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Clean the surface thoroughly. Any oil, dust, or residue weakens the adhesive bond. For fabric, wash and dry without softener first. For hard surfaces like tumblers or shoes, wipe down with isopropyl alcohol and let dry completely.

If you are working on a curved surface like a tumbler, stabilize it with a non-slip mat or clamp holder so it does not move during placement.

Step 2: Prepare Your Stones

Pour rhinestones into a rhinestone tray or onto a flocked surface. Shake or tilt the tray gently so the stones settle flat-side down. You want to pick stones up from the domed side, not the flat back.

Sort out any chipped, cloudy, or misshapen stones before you start. One bad stone in a row catches the eye.

Step 3: Tool Selection

For ss3 through ss40 stones: use the Crystal Katana. Press the tip lightly onto the dome of the stone. The synthetic wax tip grips the stone without crushing it. Lift and transfer.

Warm the Crystal Katana tip slightly with your (clean) fingers before picking up smaller stones in cold environments. This softens the wax just enough to improve grip.

Step 4: Adhesive Selection and Application

  • Gemtac: water-based, easy to use, washes up easily, great for fabric and most surfaces.
  • Fusion Tack: strong, flexible bond, excellent for tumblers, shoes, and hard surfaces.

Glued Projects (tumblers, shoes, hard surfaces): Apply a small dot of adhesive to the placement area, not to the stone itself. A precision glue bottle gives you control over dot size.

Hotfix Projects (fabric, apparel): Pre-arrange stones in your design pattern. Then use a hotfix applicator or flat iron/press with a pressing cloth to activate the adhesive. Press firmly for 10 to 15 seconds per section. Let cool completely before moving the fabric.

Step 5: Placement

Place stones one at a time for intricate designs. For large fill areas, work in rows from one edge across. Keep spacing consistent. A light pencil grid or transfer sheet helps with alignment.

Set the Crystal Katana tip gently onto the stone and lower it straight down into the adhesive dot. Do not drag or slide. Straight down, slight pressure, lift.

Step back regularly and check your work from a distance. Spacing errors are much easier to correct early than after the adhesive sets.

Step 6: Curing and Setting

For Gemtac and Fusion Tack: follow the manufacturer's cure time for your specific surface. Always allow full cure before handling or wearing. Do not stretch fabric or flex hard surfaces during cure.

For UV resin with unfoiled stones: cure each section under a UV lamp as you work. Typically 60 to 90 seconds per section. Full hardness develops within a few hours of final cure. Unless you are using UV resin to adhere stones to glassware, do not use UV resin with regular hotfix or non-hotfix that are not unfoiled, as the light cannot pass through to cure. It is not safe to have uncured UV resin on your project. Think clear glass to clear glass as the best solution for UV Resin and rhinestones.

Step 7: Finishing and Quality Check

Once cured, inspect each stone. Press any stones that appear raised or insecure. Refer to the CrystalNinja Glue Guide for the right repair adhesive for your surface.

For apparel: wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle. Do not tumble dry rhinestoned fabric. Air dry flat.

Store rhinestone projects flat or in padded packaging. Stacking pressure or sharp edges can dislodge stones over time.

Pro Tips from Kellie DeFries

  • Work in sections of 2 to 3 square inches at a time. Trying to cover too large an area at once causes the adhesive to skin over before placement is complete.
  • Keep a small lamp or ring light at your work surface. Good lighting shows every misaligned stone before the adhesive sets.
  • Clean your Crystal Katana tip when it starts picking up inconsistently. Lightly scrape with your fingernail and clean with rubbing alcohol as tiny amounts of glue or debris can get on the tip. Your Crystal Katana tip should last hundreds of thousands of stones if kept clean and used properly.
  • Choose a fill pattern that accentuates your project.
  • If a stone ends up crooked, use a toothpick to nudge it while the adhesive is still wet. Never use the Crystal Katana to push or drag a placed stone.
