Why honeycomb wins
Grid rows leave visible lanes of glue between stones. Honeycomb offsets each row so stones settle into the valleys, which means tighter coverage, fewer gaps, and sparkle from every angle. It is one of the six fill patterns I teach, and the one I recommend mastering first for full-coverage work.
The curve is the challenge
A tumbler is not flat, and the curve punishes sloppy rows. Two things keep you honest:
- Consistent stone sizing. A half millimeter of variance compounds around a curve until the pattern buckles. This is why I use KiraKira glass: the sizing holds row after row.
- A level starting line. Tape a straight baseline before the first stone. Every row after inherits the first one's behavior, good or bad.
The method in brief
- Clean the tumbler and tape your baseline.
- Lay the first row true. Slow down here. It pays off for the next fifty rows.
- Offset each new row so stones nest in the gaps below.
- Work small glue sections with the Crystal Katana. Snug spacing, never touching.
- Check your pattern every few rows from arm's length. The curve hides drift up close.
